What is the Difference Between Steroid and Corticosteroid?

The main difference between steroids and corticosteroids lies in their function and natural occurrence in the body. Steroids and corticosteroids both belong to the same class of chemicals, which are often hormones that help your organs, tissues, and cells perform their functions. The two main types of steroids are corticosteroids and anabolic-androgenic steroids.

Corticosteroids are:

  • Synthetic hormones similar in structure and function to cortisol, which is naturally produced by the adrenal glands.
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a wide range of conditions, such as asthma, eczema, inflammatory bowel disease, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.
  • Available in various forms, including tablets, inhalers, nasal sprays, injections, creams, lotions, and gels.

Anabolic Steroids:

  • Often used illegally by some people to increase their muscle mass.
  • Synthetic hormones that act similarly to the hormone testosterone.
  • Not the same as corticosteroids, which are used to treat various medical conditions.

Corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation and suppressing the immune system, while anabolic steroids are used to promote muscle growth. Both corticosteroids and anabolic steroids can cause side effects, especially when taken for extended periods or at high doses.
